Truck Permits - Tips From A Career Truckdriver
by: Scott Brandon
Most people hate paperwork and OTR commercial truck drivers and no different, Most truckers get paid by the miles they drive and not by the amount of paperwork they do but often times they have to spend lots of time doing paperwork for things like truck permits, fuel permits, insurance, freight paperwork, and licensing paperwork.
For example you may be required to have special fuel permits, overweight permits, hazmat permits, commercial drivers license, and of course an adequate amount of insurance. As a career long-haul truck driver that hates paperwork I have developed some short cuts over the years and have put together a short list of tips that you can use to cut down on the amount of time your spending on paperwork and get back to driving instead.
Organization is the first place to start and that means putting everything in order and in its proper place so instead of having you papers tossed all over the truck you should develop a file box and put everything into individual sections for licensing papers, truck permits, bingo stamps, fuel receipts, freight paperwork, misc papers, etc. By doing this you will save a ton of time just by having everything organized. Keep some extra pens and pencils with the papers also.
The internet is often thought of as a time waster because people surf from site to site as a new form of entertainment but for commercial truck driver is can be a real time saver because you can complete most paperwork online for things like fuel permits, bingo stamps, and truck permits. If you don't have internet access in your truck you can usually get online at most major commercial truck stops.
So by now you should have all your paperwork organized and be doing as much of it as possible online. The next step is to start planning ahead and think about your up coming paperwork and try to get a jump on it by utilizing any downtime to complete the paperwork ahead of time.
The increasing amount of paperwork required for commercial truck drivers is getting excessive and needs to stop so if your a trucker and fed up with the increasing amount of regulation I ask that you contact your state congressman and senator and tell them enough is enough.
